As we commented in an old post, we would like to publish more posts about vineyard jobs than we published in previous years... At this time, we are going to speak about prepruning tasks which are carried out after wine vintage when the vineyard don't have leaves and just before performing manual pruning tasks.
A few weeks ago we visited our cousin Victor in the El Provencio Village (it is really winegrower Village) and we could see the "General Agrícola" prepruner machinery working. Victor was working in his vineyard with Daniel (he is the prepruner machinery owner). It was the first time we saw this machinery working, so we were impressed, we really liked it so much.
The goal, we can get with this jobs, is to take out the end part of the vine shoot that are entangled in the wires. On this way, the later manual pruning task is really easy. This prepruner machine is composed of ten cutting discs that the driver can set in different heights to cut the vine shoot. As you can see in our video, the driver has to open and close the prepruner always the machine is near each stake... it seems to be a very complex job but he has a special electro-hydraulic system that makes him this job very easy, reaching a working speed of 8 km/h.
As also you can see in our video, this prepruner machinery is installed on a grape harvester (it is a Gregoire G107... as Daniel told us, it is pretty old but it continues working very fine), but this prepruner machinery is very common to see it on narrow tractors since all farmers don't have a grape harvester to fix it., this is a special case.
